Ariel Wang

An eclectic musician, Ariel Wang's songs will bring you to the Appalachians and then throw you into a psychedelic trance.  Her music speaks of sadness and longing, love made and grown, tigers who come to play, and an ever longing to break any and all boundaries conceived.  Whether on the guitar or fiddle, banjo or foot-tapping, her tunes are refreshing yet timeless.  Sometimes she takes the stage with just her mandolin buddy Terrell Liedstrand, other times with a full band, but you can be sure she's always got some surprise collaborators popping in.

Way Out West Concert Series - Nathan Clevenger Group

CJC's Way Out West Concert Series provides composer-performers from the Bay Area and beyond with a Tuesday evening showcase for forward-looking original work in jazz and related genres. Join us weekly in Rendon Hall for Way Out West!

An evening of new and recent compositions as the Nathan Clevenger Group prepares to record their 3rd album.

Kasey Knudsen: alto sax
Cory Wright: tenor sax, clarinet, flute
Rachel Condry: bass clarinet, clarinet
Lisa Mezzacappa: bass
Jon Arkin: drums
Jason Levis: drums, percussion
Tim DeCillis: vibes, percussion
Nathan Clevenger: guitar

The Nathan Clevenger Group has been playing sideways-but-melodic jazz-adjacent music in the Bay Area since 2003. Recently expanded to a percussion-heavy octet, the band is exploring a new series of pieces featuring dense rhythmic and melodic counterpoint and preparing to record their 3rd album in January 2019. KQED's Andrew Gilbert kindly opined: "Drawing on orchestral jazz concepts pioneered by Duke Ellington, Sun Ra and Gil Evans, (Clevenger) revels in coaxing a kaleidoscopic array of voicings from the band, writing extended dreamscapes that unfold with their own quirky internal logic."

Blake Miller & the Old Fashioned Aces are breathing new life into an old sound. It's traditional Cajun music in a traditional setting, but more than that, it's a powerhouse trio having fun.  Whether they appear as an acoustic trio or a full electric band, finer musicians playing Cajun music cannot be found. In a world where it seems everyone is continually stretching the boundaries of Louisiana French music, the Aces nest comfortably inside the well worn tracks of Cajun Music. From old fiddle tunes, to classic dance floor packers, to bilingual country classics, their music is comfort food for the Cajun music fan.

Jan 15, 8pm to 11:30pm, Ashkenaz Music & Dance Community Center, 1317 San Pablo Ave, Berkeley
