Exploration of Forms: Queer Improvisations Dance Workshop

Gerald Casel

Authentic Pride [for LGBTQ+ and allies]

We start with an Authentic Movement practice (while challenging the words `authentic' and `pride'). With eyes closed, we begin by exploring spontaneous gestures and stillness, while following impulses in the present moment. We find strategies of belonging in space and being seen as how we individually define authenticity in our own ways. We move joyfully, dancing as a collective force with and for each other-to witness, feel, and experience fierceness. We honor and celebrate who we are as queer movers and makers, with love and with deep pride.

Exploration of Forms is a free, public workshop series. No previous dance experience is necessary. All workshops take place on Sundays, 1-3pm, in Bancroft Dance Studio at UC Berkeley. Donations are encouraged.

About the Instructor: Gerald Casel is a San Francisco-based dance artist and director of GERALD CASEL DANCE. A graduate of The Juilliard School, he holds an M.F.A. from UW-Milwaukee. Casel is an Associate Professor and Associate Chair of Theater Arts at UC Santa Cruz. He received a Bessie award for his work with Michael Clark, Stephen Petronio, Zvi Gotheiner, and Stanley Love. Casel's choreographic research and social practice complicates and provokes questions surrounding colonialism, collective cultural amnesia, whiteness and privilege, and the tensions between the invisible/perceived/obvious structures of power. Recent projects include collaborations with Netta Yerushalmy, Keith Hennessy, and Camping at Centre National de la Danse in Paris. In 2018, he led Dancing Around Race, a community engagement residency that interrogated racial equity in dance in the Bay Area. Casel is a recipient of the 2019 National Dance Project grant that supports the creation and tour of Not About Race Dance.
